There are lots of good quality gold detectors for sale on the market today that do a good job finding gold nuggets. While there were only a few options a decade ago, today there are well over a dozen different detectors that are specifically designed for gold prospecting.
However, in this article I don’t want to simply talk about gold detectors. We are specifically talking about finding DEEP gold, those big, deep gold nuggets that are over a foot deep underground.
Deep gold nuggets are easily missed even using the best gold detectors. Hearing those nuggets is challenging, but with many gold detectors it is simply impossible to hear them. The average VLF metal detector will miss almost all of those deep nuggets.
Below are 5 gold detectors that will find deep gold nuggets. Most of these came out on the market in just the past few years, but they are proving themselves to be quality gold detectors.
Minelab GPZ 7000
The GPZ 7000 is currently the best detector on the market for finding deep gold. While all of the other detectors on this list use pulse induction technology, the GPZ uses Zero Voltage Transmission (ZVT), a new technology that no other detector has. The result has been recovery of gold nuggets at depths not seen before with other detectors.
The downside? The GPZ 7000 is an expensive detector. It was priced at $9,999 USD when it was released, and although the price has come down a bit since then, it is still the most expensive gold detector on the market.
Minelab GPX 5000
The GPX 5000 is the latest metal detector in Minelab’s GP/GPX series of detectors. Up until just recently (with the release of the GPZ 7000) it was the considered the ultimate gold detector on the market.
Using pulse induction technology, the GPX 5000 does an exceptional job of finding gold nuggets. It can find gold nuggets of all sizes, but it is excellent at finding deep gold nuggets too. It is important to learn the various settings on the detector and how to use it properly. Many beginners are confused and overwhelmed with all the different settings and options, but in reality this is what makes this such a good detector. You can “dial in” the detector so it has the perfect settings for the particular area you’re prospecting.
White’s TDI SL
The White’s TDI SL is the first pulse induction gold detector released by White’s Electronics. This is another company that has been making metal detectors for decades and has a great reputation for producing quality products, and the TDI SL is no exception.
One of the favorite features of this detector is how lightweight it is, a very important consideration when you spend a whole day swinging your metal detector. For deep nuggets you will want to use the 12” round coil.
This is the first dedicated pulse induction gold detector released by Garrett, a company that has proven itself as one of the best detector companies out there.
A few feature that are very popular with the Garrett ATX are that it is a waterproof detector that can be submerged up to 10 feet. The detector folds up into a fairly compact unit that can be packed into remote locations.
There are several coil options including a 20×15” DeepSeeker mono coil that is the ideal coil for finding those large, deep gold nuggets.
The “Old” Minelabs
Last, but certainly not least, are the older models of pulse induction metal detectors from Minelab.
Minelab has been the major player for nearly 20 years now, and there have been many different models that are great for deep gold. While most consider the newer models to have good improvements over these older detectors, that doesn’t mean that they aren’t still great gold detectors, particularly for finding larger gold nuggets.
Some of the older models worth considering include the SD2000, SD2100, SD2200, GP Extreme, GP 3000, GP 3500, GPX 4000, and the GPX 4500.
Despite being older detectors, these are still awesome gold detectors, and sometimes you can find used ones for very good prices on eBay and Craigslist. In fact, there are some skilled gold hunters that are still using these older model Minelab detectors to hunt for gold even today!
